What are the Technical Requirements?
N.B. For the online classroom (eLecta), students must have a working microphone (headsets work very well)
and have a high-speed internet connection. Electa does work with both PC and Mac computers, though as of 6/2011, not all features
are enabled for Mac at this point.
How do these classes work? Latin 100-400 classes meet online (via eLecta) for two formal class sessions and one informal help session per week.
Each class has a scheduled meeting time, e.g. from 8:00 to 9:15 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays (Mountain Time), but if
you cannot attend during that time period, you may watch a recording of the class at your convenience. The weekly
(drop-in; optional) help session is held on Thursday evenings from 6 - 7 Mountain Time. Students can check their grades
via our online gradebook Engrade. Students take tests and do other activities on the class Quia page - see the Quia Page
links on the left side of this page.
What is the Discussion Board?
The Discussion Board is your go-to place for questions, answers, and discussions of all kinds.
PARENTS, please make your own account, and request that I add you to the 'Parents' group - there is a Parent forum,
invisible to students, which I highly recommend that you join. You can see all of the student fora as well.
STUDENTS, this is the place to ask homework questions and any other questions you have about the course. Please read
the titles of each forum, and make sure that your posts are in the proper location, are kind, and are appropriate (would be OK
for anyone of any age, even a young child, to read). Gratias!
What is the parents' role? Latin 100-400: Parents are expected to proctor exams (4 per year for Latin 100) and administer the National Latin Exam
in March (registration will
be done for you! You will receive the exam in the mail -- just proctor it and mail it to the national center in the provided
envelope). Beyond that, parents may OPT to attend the online classes with
their students, help with homework, and participate in any manner they wish. Parents should roughly monitor study time
and contact me if Latin is taking their student 4 hours/week or more -- 4 hours is the maximum homework time limit; students
taking more than 4 hours generally need study tips to help them work more efficiently.
Do you accept payment from charter schools?
Yes, but only those who can pay tuition by the due dates posted, and for which Lone Pine does not need to do any paperwork (the parents can
submit the paperwork for the course on their own).
What materials are needed? Latin 100: Students will receive extensive teacher-created materials via a special download link. The materials contain
extensive materials -- packets for each
chapter, video clips, audio recordings of each chapter, English translations of each chapter, answer keys for all homework,
and other useful documents.
Students do need to purchase the Orberg textbook -
Lingua Latina Pars I: Familia Romana - not an expensive book! You do NOT need to purchase any ancillaries -
e.g. workbook, CD - our versions are included in the materials you will download. Latin 200-400: Details will be provided to students, but the procedure is quite similar to Latin 100.
What is the homework?
Please visit the QUIA CALENDAR (click the top right corner of the Quia page to open up the whole calendar; don't simply look at the upcoming events listed on your class Quia page).
If you do not know how to do this, please watch the recording of the Orientation Meeting and/or take the Orientation Quiz on Quia.
How much time does the class take? (READ THIS ONE!) For Latin 100 and 200, the homework time LIMIT is 4 hours/week. (This does not count time spent studying for tests.)
If the homework takes you longer than that, STOP working and email me to let me know how much you completed, and what your
study strategy has been.
When will you post the class recording?
I usually post the class recordings at night. Please email me if the following day arrives (7 a.m. Mountain Time) and the recording is not posted.
What are all these websites for?
Quia - your class page (e.g. www.quia.com/kkarppinen/latin100.html). Visit it at class time for the link to the eLecta classroom. Visit it after class to open up the
calendar to see the homework. Visit it to take vocabulary quizzes, tests, or play review games. Visit it for the Latin dictionary links at the bottom of the page.
Engrade - Our online gradebook, updated on Sunday nights. Visit it to check your grades and see if you have any missing work!
eLecta - Our online classroom. You reach it through Quia. Be sure to change your password from the default!
What is the late work policy?
Please read your course syllabus! Work that arrives between the due date and the Sunday night immediately following receives
70% credit. Work that arrives between that Sunday and the end of the unit receives 40% credit. Moral of the story: Don't turn in late work!!!
